A group of us has started organising through Liverpool Friends of the Earth. We’re starting a divestment campaign and also want to organise a climate demo in Liverpool that would be related to the campaign on the 28th or 29th November (tbc).
There is already a university group and we want to develop a local government divestment campaign.

Essentially we’re looking for anyone interested in helping out who is based in Liverpool, Sefton, Knowlsey or Wirral.
The target of the campaign is the Merseyside Pension Fund http://mpfmembers.org.uk/
According to the research and estimates done by Fossil Free UK, the Merseyside Pension Fund has £355,000,000 directly or indirectly invested in fossil fuel companies.
We think it is unethical for local government pension funds to be investing and making financial returns from companies developing and extracting fossil fuels, now that we know that burning fossil fuels is causing climate change.
Also it is financially imprudent, given that if we are to stay within UN/IPCC targets for Co2 emissions aimed at limiting climate change to 2°C, 80% of declared fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground

The value of shares and investments in fossil fuel companies are at risk of collapsing once people, civil society and governments start getting serious about limiting the extraction of fossil fuels we can’t afford to burn.

Up until the demo, the campaign will be relatively straight-forward; Identify exactly how much the Merseyside Pension Fund has invested in fossil fuels, draft, publish and publicise a petition calling for divestment and organising and promoting the demo.
I’m hoping to get things going but would be happy to hand over the running of the campaign to a functioning and motivated team after the demo. We’re aiming to have our first meeting the w/c 12th October.

This event, to take place in Liverpool on Wednesday 21st October 2015, launches the working partnership between Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) the University of Liverpool and third sector groups within the City of Liverpool and beyond with the aim of improving the understanding of the research needs of third sector organisations of varying sizes and the research interests and capacity of University researchers. It will focus on identifying key areas such as independence; social value; health and social care; changing face of volunteering (workfare); and the impact of devolution. Guest keynote speaker is Karl Wilding, Director of Public Policy at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

Hubbub is a relatively new start-up charity taking a fresh approach to communicating sustainability, through being positive, upbeat and open sourcing what works.
Currently working on a campaign with Love Food Hate Waste and Tesco which will run in October in Liverpool, aiming to get young people (especially students) interested and active on the issue of food waste.
There are a few things we’re looking to do as part of this:
· Get the best bloggers in Liverpool to take on our week-long Food Fighters Challenge.The concept is simple; we provide £40 of grocery vouchers in return for which we ask them to spend a week trying to avoid wasting any food, in the process documenting the experience on their blog and on social media.
· Encourage young people in the area to use social media to share recipes, tips, thoughts, revelations and encourage others to also get involved, as part of the#ExpressYourShelf campaign. This will culminate in a tweetathon on 21st October where we want to hijack Liverpool’s social media feeds with inspiration for cutting food waste. The three most inspiring and creative contributions who will be awarded £50 worth of Tesco Vouchers each.
· We’re looking for 5 ‘house-share’ households to take part in a one week trial of different food waste apps, each participating household will receive £25 of Tesco vouchers.

As part of our build up to COP21 Paris we are holding a rally at 12pm Thurs 22nd October in University Square, Brownlow Hill which is just outside the Liverpool Guild of Students, L3 5TR.
The intention is to make it quite noticeable with drums and music etc. Alex at the Guild is making a big effort to get local media and TV involved so hopefully that will all go to plan. Petition to government re feed in tarifs that support renewable energy schemes

Dr Helena Kettleborough PhD is addressing the theme Dreaming the Earth by sharing her exploration of Thomas Berry’s work on The Dream of the Earth and the New Universe Story and how these may help us in meeting the challenges of our time including climate change and the extinction of species. She will draw upon her experience in community development and neighbourhood regeneration to offer some practice tools.
She will explore these ideas using the theme Gaia’s Graveyards – A participative evening of discovery
Monday 26th October 6-8pm at St Brides (Percy St, Liverpool L8 7LT) including some interaction with art installations. Parking is available in the church grounds.
Helena will follow this up the next morning
Tuesday 27th October 10 – 12.30 at St Michael’s in the City (Upper Pitt St, Liverpool L1 5BD) with a practical workshop on the theme Deep calling unto deep – taking these ideas into our lives.
